▼About the Artist
【Osamu Suzuki】
Following the end of WWII, Suzuki was selected for the first time as a ceramic artist for the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition in 1947. In 1948 he formed a group called Sodeisha with Kazuo Yagi and a few others, where they aimed to make ceramic pieces more freely and without concerning themselves with “usefulness”. Following their first group exhibition in 1951 Suzuki continued to exhibit with them every year, playing an active role among the other passionate members. At the same time, he continued to push his works in exhibits abroad and won awards across multiple years, including gold at Prague International Ceramic Art Exhibition (1962), gold at Vallauris International Biennial of Ceramics (1970) and the Faenza International Minister of Ceramics and Trade’s Award (1971). Within Japan he also won a number of awards like the Mainichi Art Award (1985) and Japan Art Grand Prize (1998), then became the first ceramic artist to win the Asahi Prize in 1999. Suzuki creates free-spirited, unique visions of animals like birds and horses or nature motifs like clouds and the wind. His white and blue porcelain works prove a skill with form that is unparalleled in contemporary art.
