Fujio Koyama was a Japanese ceramic artist and researcher, along with being a leading scholar of Chinese ceramics. This is a work made at Hananoki Kiln where Koyama devoted himself to making pottery in his later years. Koyama’s artful sense can be deeply felt in the finish of this bowl.

【Fujio Koyama (Kozanko)】:1900-1975
Born in Tamashima, Asakuchi, Okayama.
Age 30: Became a staff member of the Oriental Ceramic Research Institute.
Age 41: Worked at the Imperial Household Museum in Tokyo. Discovered the remains of a kiln of Sung dynasty white porcelain in Hebei Province, China.
Age 43: Published “Souzai” under Jurakusha and “History of Chinese Celadon” under Bunchudo.
Age 46: Became a director of the Ceramic Society of Japan.
Age 48: Formed the Rural Crafts Promotion Association with Toyozo Arakawa and Munemaro Ishiguro; later worked in the Research Division of the Tokyo Museum.
Age 59: Became an investigator of cultural properties in the Intangible Cultural Properties Division of the Secretariat of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Properties.
Age 61: Took responsibility for designating the forgery “Einin no Tsubo” as an Important Cultural Property and resigned as investigator.
Age 72: Became a director of the Japan Crafts Association.
Age 73: Moved to Gotomaki-Ichinochisawa, Izumi, Toki City; later founded the Society of Oriental Ceramic Studies and became chairman of the committee.
