The image of a mino (straw raincoat) by Gengensai is accompanied by text in Yumyosai’s calligraphy, resulting in an incredibly graceful piece. The details of the inscription are unknown. Hounsai has signed the box.

【11th Head of the House of Urasenke, Seichu Soshitsu (Gengensai)】
The 11th generation leader of the house of Urasenke, one of Japan’s three major schools of tea ceremony. Soshitsu was the fifth son of the feudal lord Noritomo Matsudaira. Soshitsu’s childhood names included Chiyomatsu, etc. At age 10 he was decided to be the successor to the House of Urasenke. At age 50 he became a monk and took the name Seichu. He invented Taterei, a new style of tea ceremony that modernized the practice. He passed away in 1877, aged 68.
【12th Head of the House of Urasenke, Jikisho Soshitsu (Yumyosai)】
Lived from 1852-1917. He was the son of Gensuke Kadokura, of the Kyoto Kadokura family. After retirement he took the name Genmuro.
【15th Head of the House of Urasenke, Hanso Soshitsu (Hounsai)】
He was born as the eldest son of Tantansai, the 14th head of house. He studied economics at Doshisha Law School and at the University of Hawaii before moving on to learn Zen meditation at Daitokuji Temple under the monk Zuigan in 1949. Amidst his various studies he was also drafted during WWII. Afterwards, in 1964, he became the 15th head of house following his father’s passing.

The scroll overall has signs of previous use and deterioration. The hanging cord is severely damaged and held together with a clip. A shaft tip is missing on one side.
